§ 53. Closed seasons for fishing by fish species

(1) It is prohibited to catch:
1) river lamprey in rivers – from 1 March to 30 June;
2) salmon and sea trout in internal water bodies – from 1 September to 30 November, except in the rivers of Narva, Selja, Jägala, Pirita, Vääna, Purtse and Valgejõgi, which are subject to restrictions under subsection 29 (7) of the Fishing Act;
3) brown trout – from 15 September to 31 January, except in the River Narva;
4) common whitefish in the River Pärnu – from 15 October to 15 November;
5) Peipsi whitefish – from 1 November to 30 November;
6) vendace in ice-free water – from 1 May to 1 July and from 10 November to 30 December;
7) northern pike in ice-free water – from 15 March to 10 May;
8) common bream – from 1 May to 20 June, except when fishing with simple hand lines, hand lines and bottom lines;
9) tench – from 20 June to 20 July, except when fishing with simple hand lines, hand lines and bottom lines. In the lakes of Endla and Sinijärv (Endla Sinijärv), it is not permitted to catch tench with any fishing gear from 1 April to 20 July;
10) vimba bream in the rivers of Kunda, Selja, Loobu, Valgejõe, Jägala, Pirita, Vääna, Keila, Vasalemma, Vihterpalu, Kasari (together with its branches), Paadrema, Audru, Pärnu, Sauga and Reiu – from 10 May to 20 June;
11) zander in ice-free water – from 15 April to 15 June
12) zander in the sea – from 15 May to 15 July;
13) zander in the sea – by-catch from 15 May to 15 July, except when fishing with a gillnet;
14) crayfish – from 1 September to 31 July.
(2) Fishing for salmonids named in subclauses 1 2) and 3) in water bodies or their sections included in the list of spawning areas or habitats of salmon, brown trout, salmon trout or grayling referred to in subsection 51 (2) of the Nature Conservation Act is prohibited by wading in water during the prohibition period, except in Narva river and for lamprey fishing with lamprey cone trap and lamprey fyke net.
